The key distinction was the finish: a natural top required a higher grade of blemish-free spruce, leading the J-50 to initially carry a higher price. Over the decades, the J-50's specifications largely mirrored the J-45, with changes in pickguard shape (from small to a larger tortoise tear-drop\/50s style) and bridge design (from rectangular to the \"belly-up\" style) occurring in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
