HOW TO SAFELY PACK YOUR GUITAR, AMPLIFIER OR EFFECTS PEDAL FOR SHIPPING

The Denmark Street Guitars Guide to Packing and Shipping Musical Instruments

Whether you're selling your guitar to Denmark Street Guitars, sending an amplifier for part exchange or shipping a valuable effects pedal, ensuring your equipment is correctly packed is essential.

At Denmark Street Guitars, we regularly receive instruments and equipment from customers across the UK and around the world. To help ensure your items arrive safely, we've put together this practical guide to preparing guitars, amplifiers and effects pedals for transportation.

Taking a little extra care with your packaging can make all the difference, particularly when shipping vintage, rare or valuable equipment.

1. HOW TO PACK A GUITAR FOR SHIPPING

Whether you're shipping a Fender Stratocaster, a Gibson Les Paul or a vintage Martin acoustic, we strongly recommend using a suitable hard case wherever possible.

STEP 1 – PREPARE YOUR GUITAR

Before packing your instrument:

  • Take clear photographs of the guitar, including its condition, serial number and any existing marks.

  • Loosen the strings slightly to reduce tension, particularly on older or more delicate instruments.

  • Remove any loose accessories, including tremolo arms, capos, straps and detachable parts.

  • Secure any switches or other components that could be damaged in transit.

  • Ensure the guitar is clean and dry before packing.

Important: If your guitar has a particularly fragile headstock, neck repair or vintage finish, additional precautions may be necessary.

STEP 2 – PROTECT THE GUITAR INSIDE ITS CASE

Place the guitar inside a correctly fitting hard case.

Use clean, soft, non-abrasive material to support the instrument around the neck, headstock and body where necessary.

Pay particular attention to the headstock, especially on Gibson-style guitars with angled headstocks.

The guitar should fit securely inside the case without being able to move backwards, forwards or sideways.

Avoid placing excessive pressure on the neck or headstock.

Vintage Guitar Warning: Some older nitrocellulose finishes can react with plastic, rubber, adhesive tape and certain synthetic materials. Always use finish-safe wrapping or clean cotton cloth in direct contact with the instrument.

STEP 3 – SECURE THE CASE

Close all case latches and check that the instrument is securely positioned.

If the case contains an internal accessory compartment, ensure that any items inside cannot move around or come into contact with the guitar.

Do not leave loose tools, strings, cables or accessories inside the main case compartment.

STEP 4 – PACK THE CASE INTO A SHIPPING CARTON

We recommend using a strong, double-walled cardboard guitar shipping carton.

  • Wrap the hard case in several layers of bubble wrap or suitable protective material.

  • Place cushioning material at the bottom of the carton.

  • Position the case centrally inside the box.

  • Fill all empty spaces using suitable packing foam, cardboard supports or additional cushioning.

  • Ensure there is adequate protection at both ends, particularly around the headstock area.

Ideally, allow approximately 5 cm of protective cushioning around the case wherever practical.

The case should not move when the carton is gently rocked.

STEP 5 – SEAL AND LABEL THE PACKAGE

Seal all openings and seams using strong packing tape, ideally following the H-taping method across the top and bottom of the carton.

Attach the shipping label securely and remove any old delivery labels or barcodes.

Mark the carton:

FRAGILE – MUSICAL INSTRUMENT – HANDLE WITH CARE

Although fragile labels are useful, they are not a substitute for proper packaging.

SHIPPING A GUITAR WITHOUT A HARD CASE

If a hard case is unavailable, we strongly recommend obtaining a suitable one before shipping, particularly for valuable or vintage instruments.

For lower-value instruments, a purpose-designed guitar shipping carton with rigid internal supports and sufficient cushioning may be suitable.

However, shipping a guitar in a soft gig bag alone is not recommended.

2. HOW TO PACK AN AMPLIFIER FOR SHIPPING

Guitar amplifiers can be particularly vulnerable during transportation due to their weight, internal components, speakers and, in the case of valve amplifiers, fragile glass valves.

Correct packing is essential to protect both the amplifier cabinet and its electronics.

STEP 1 – PREPARE YOUR AMPLIFIER

Before packing:

  • Disconnect the amplifier from the mains supply and allow it to cool completely.

  • Remove power cables, footswitches and other detachable accessories.

  • Photograph the amplifier from all sides, including its controls and any existing damage.

  • Ensure all screws, handles, corners and fittings are secure.

  • Remove any loose items from inside the cabinet.

Valve Amplifiers: Where practical and recommended by the manufacturer, valves may be removed and individually protected. If you are unsure how to do this safely, leave them in place and seek professional advice.

Never open an amplifier chassis or attempt to access internal electrical components, as dangerous voltages can remain present even after the amplifier has been disconnected.

STEP 2 – PROTECT THE AMPLIFIER

Wrap the amplifier in a clean protective covering to prevent scratches and marks.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Control knobs and switches

  • Speaker grilles

  • Cabinet corners

  • Handles

  • Exposed valves or delicate components

  • Rear panels and connectors

Use dense foam or suitable protective corner blocks to provide cushioning.

Avoid allowing heavy packaging materials to place direct pressure on delicate control panels or speaker grilles.

STEP 3 – USE A STRONG SHIPPING CARTON

Due to their weight, amplifiers should be packed in a heavy-duty, double-walled or reinforced cardboard carton suitable for the amplifier's dimensions and weight.

Place a substantial layer of dense protective foam at the bottom of the carton.

Position the amplifier centrally and provide adequate cushioning on every side.

For heavier amplifiers, we recommend at least 5–10 cm of suitable protective material wherever practical.

Important: Loose packing peanuts alone are not suitable for supporting heavy amplifiers, as the amplifier can shift and settle during transportation.

STEP 4 – DOUBLE BOX WHERE POSSIBLE

For valuable, vintage or heavy amplifiers, double boxing is strongly recommended.

Place the first securely packed carton inside a larger outer carton, with an additional layer of dense cushioning between the two boxes.

This provides an additional level of protection against knocks and impacts.

For particularly heavy or fragile vintage amplifiers, a purpose-built flight case or specialist transport service may be preferable.

STEP 5 – SEAL AND LABEL

Use strong reinforced packing tape to secure the carton.

Ensure that the bottom of the box is sufficiently strong to support the amplifier's weight.

Clearly mark the package:

FRAGILE – GUITAR AMPLIFIER – HEAVY ITEM

Always check the weight and size restrictions of your chosen courier before arranging collection.

3. HOW TO PACK AN EFFECTS PEDAL FOR SHIPPING

Effects pedals may be smaller and easier to transport than guitars or amplifiers, but they still require careful packaging to protect their switches, knobs, sockets and electronic components.

This is particularly important for vintage, rare or collectable pedals.

STEP 1 – PREPARE YOUR PEDAL

Before packing:

  • Remove any loose accessories.

  • Remove standard removable batteries where safe and practical, checking applicable shipping requirements.

  • Photograph the pedal, including its serial number and existing condition.

  • Check that all knobs and switches are secure.

For vintage pedals, take particular care with original knobs, labels, finishes and other delicate components.

STEP 2 – WRAP THE PEDAL

Place the pedal in a clean, suitable protective bag or wrapping.

Wrap it in several layers of bubble wrap or protective foam, ensuring that the knobs, switches and input/output sockets are protected.

Do not wrap adhesive tape directly around the pedal or allow tape to touch its finish.

If the pedal has particularly delicate or protruding controls, use additional rigid protection to prevent pressure being applied to them.

STEP 3 – USE A SUITABLE CARDBOARD BOX

Select a strong cardboard carton slightly larger than the wrapped pedal.

Place cushioning material at the bottom of the box before positioning the pedal centrally.

Fill all remaining spaces with protective material so that the pedal cannot move during transportation.

Avoid using oversized boxes with insufficient cushioning.

STEP 4 – PROTECT ORIGINAL PACKAGING

If your effects pedal comes with its original box, paperwork or accessories, these can be particularly important for collectable vintage pedals.

We recommend protecting the original box separately and placing it inside a larger shipping carton.

Never attach a courier label directly to a collectable pedal's original packaging.

STEP 5 – SEAL AND LABEL

Seal the carton securely using strong packing tape.

Attach the shipping label and ensure the package is ready for collection.

For particularly valuable or collectable pedals, consider using an additional outer carton for extra protection.

ADDITIONAL ADVICE FOR SHIPPING VINTAGE AND VALUABLE EQUIPMENT

When shipping rare, valuable or historically significant musical instruments, we recommend taking additional precautions.

Photograph Everything

Take photographs of the item before packing, during the packing process and once the carton has been sealed.

These photographs may be useful if a problem occurs during transportation.

Keep Accessories Separate

Loose accessories can cause damage during transit. Always secure them in a separate compartment or individually wrapped package.

Use Quality Packaging

We strongly recommend new or undamaged, heavy-duty cardboard cartons, dense protective foam and appropriate cushioning materials.

Consider Professional Packing

For exceptionally valuable instruments, delicate vintage amplifiers or significant collections, professional packing and specialist transportation may be the safest option.
